Summary
The following steps will help you to wallpaper around
items such as light switches, electrical outlets and
other awkward shapes:
1 Reaching an obstacle
2 Hanging ready for trimming
3 Slicing the paper
4 Creasing paper
5 Cutting the paper
6 Finishing
7 Papering around light switches
8 Papering behind radiators
Tools
Blade, paint scraper, stick, smoothing brush.
Step 1 - Reaching an obstacle
When you reach an obstacle such as the architrave
on a window or door, don't try to measure and cut
a piece to fit exactly. The best technique is to
set a piece in place and cut it to fit around the
architrave while the paper is on the wall.
Step 2 - Hanging ready for trimming
Prepare the paper in the same way as for a
standard piece; for more information click on the
icon below. Make sure that one edge butts up
against the edge of the previous strip as you set
the paper loosely in place on the wall over the
architrave.
Step 3 - Slicing the paper
Hold the piece in place on the wall. Make a
diagonal cut from the corner of the architrave
across to the edge of the paper. For a window repeat
the process for the bottom corner.
Step 4 - Creasing the paper
Press the paper down with a paint scraper along
the side and top edge (with a window the bottom
edge too) of the architrave. Crease the paper at
these edges. Make sure the paper is still
positioned properly at the seam.
Step 5 - Cutting the paper
Carefully cut the paper in sections along the
width of the paint scraper blade being careful
to protect the laid paper with the blade. This
will also serve to stop the wet paper tearing
or being pulled from the wall. Smooth the paper
into position, ridding it of bubbles and wrinkles.
Step 6 - Finishing
Cut and paste any pieces required to carry over
the door or over and under the window. You can
then repeat these steps on the other side of the
door or window.
Step 7 - Papering around light switches
When papering a light switch or other outlet, turn
off the power to that fixture at the mains or fuse
box. Remove the cover plate and apply the paper as
normal. Punch through the paper with a blade and
then cut along the edges to clear the opening.
Replace the fitting.
Step 8 - Papering behind radiators
It may be easier to swing down the radiator to paper
behind it - click on the icon below if you would like
to know more. If not, once the paper is set above the
radiator, angle a yardstick or similar behind the
radiator and use it to lightly press the paper against
the wall. Use the yardstick to press the paper more
firmly against the wall. Crease the paper where it
reaches the skirting board and then cut.
